Good Things in the Writing World on Good Friday
Reflecting on the blessings of books and writing
Hello, lovers of laughter and escape!
It’s Good Friday, a day to reflect on blessings, and I’m sharing good things happening in my writing world. As someone who crafts stories to make readers laugh and slip away from the everyday grind, I’m feeling especially grateful today. This week, during a meeting with my writing critique group, it hit me: I’m surrounded by incredible people and opportunities that keep my creative fire burning. Let me tell you why I feel so blessed.
Writing Critique Groups, Continued Learning, and Sharing
First, my writing critique group is a goldmine of talent and inspiration. These folks are cheerleaders, tough-love editors, and brainstorming buddies. During our latest meeting, we dove into each other’s work, tossing around ideas like confetti. One member’s knack for short stories pushed me to sharpen my story pacing. Another’s fearless approach to revision reminded me that perfection isn’t the goal—progress is. Their feedback, encouragement, and passion motivate me to show up at the keyboard, even on days when the words feel like molasses. Having talented writer friends who lift me up? That’s a gift.
Second, I’m still learning and it’s a beautiful thing. Writing is a craft that humbles you. Just when you’ve nailed a scene, a plot hole yawns wide, or a character goes rogue. Setbacks sting, but they’re also teachers. This week, I wrestled with a scene that refused to cooperate. After a walk around the backyard (several, in fact) and a good night’s rest, I found a stronger angle. Each stumble is a chance to grow, to refine my voice, and to create stories that spark joy for readers. Embracing the learning curve keeps me hungry and hopeful.
Coming this summer: Nellie’s Island, a children’s horse story of inspiration and esteem on beautiful Mackinac Island, Michigan.
Finally, I get to share my ideas and words with the world. What a privilege! Whether it’s a funny mystery about a small-town sleuth, a children’s horse story—WOW, do I have FANTASTIC news about that!—or a blog post like this one, putting my stories out there feels like sending little boats into the vast sea of readers. Some of you write back, sharing how my words made you laugh or forget your worries for a while. That connection—knowing my stories land in your hearts—is magic. In a world that can feel heavy, crafting escapes and sharing them is a calling I’m honored to chase.
So, this Good Friday, I’m counting my blessings: talented writer friends who motivate me, the endless learning that sharpens my craft, and the joy of sharing my stories with you. These three things remind me why I write—to create laughter, offer escape, and connect with readers who make this journey worthwhile. How blessed am I? Immensely. What’s good in your world today? Drop a comment—I’d love to hear!
xx,

FAVORITE THING: A friend told me about GLAMOROUS WASH, a laundry soap company. I tried their sample sizes and ADORE them. A little goes a very long way. A drop or two with my fine washables and I’m on vacation, it seems. The sample pack (three for $24) is a great gift for someone who has everything and adores fragrance. (NOTE: make sure they love smelling like a diva!)
